Crow Wing County, MN

In 1837, European Americans had constructed a trading post in this area, on the east bank of the Mississippi River, opposite the Crow Wing River’s mouth. With a general-supply store that supplied the area, the post quickly became a center of commerce with the region’s Native Americans. The village had roughly 600 Europeans and Chippewa residents by 1866, making it a major population center.

On May 23, 1857, the territorial administration established the county and named Crow Wing as the county seat. The county’s governmental organization was not changed until March 3, 1870. The county was called after the river, which was named after a crow’s wing-shaped island in the river. Brainerd City was founded on November 19, 1881, and was named after Lawrence Brainerd, the father-in-law of J. Gregory Smith, the Northern Pacific Railroad Company’s first president.

Before moving west, Smith served as governor of Vermont from 1863 until 1865. He is known as the founder and father of Brainerd. The Vermont Central Railroad’s first president was Lawrence Brainerd. On March 11, 1871, the Northern Pacific Railroad began service to Brainerd with a special train. Its regular passenger service commenced in September of the following year. On November 1, 1877, the first passenger train from the Twin Cities arrived via Sauk Rapids. The Minnesota legislature annexed part of Cass County to Crow Wing County on February 18, 1887, doubling the original territory of Crow Wing County.

The city of Baxter is located in Crow Wing County, Minnesota. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 7,610. The Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area encompasses it. Two of the city’s principal roadways are Minnesota State Highways 210 and 371.

It is the county seat of Crow Wing County and one of the larger cities in northern Minnesota. Brainerd, which was developed as a railroad crossing above the confluence, crosses the Mississippi River several miles upstream from its confluence with the Crow Wing River.

Crosby was constructed solely for the purpose of mining. It was named after George H. Crosby, a mining sector tycoon. The Milford Mine tragedy, Minnesota’s deadliest mining disaster, occurred in Crosby. A new tunnel was bored too close to nearby Foley Lake on February 5, 1924, and water poured in, killing 41 miners.

Crosslake is a city located in Crow Wing County, Minnesota. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 2,141. The city of Crosslake was founded in 1959. North Cross Lake was formally integrated into the city of Crosslake in 1972.

Emily is a town in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, that has a population of 813 people. Emily was named after Emily Lake, which is located nearby. In November 1905, it was laid out. It was founded in March of 1957. Emily’s post office opened in 1900.

Ironton, MN

Ironton is located on the Cuyuna iron range, which gives it its name. Crosby, its twin city, is located right next door. In September 1910, the town of Ironton was laid out. In June 1911, Ironton became a city. Ironton’s post office was established in 1910.

Pequot Lakes is a city in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, that is located in the United States. The population was 2,162 at the time of the 2010 census. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. In March of 1900, the town of Pequot Lakes was platted.

Garrison, MN

Garrison was founded in May of 1937. Oscar E. Garrison, a land surveyor and civil engineer, was honored with the name Garrison Township. In 1854, Oscar E. Garrison planned out Wayzata in Hennepin County. Garrison’s post office was established in 1884.

Fort Ripley was a United States military station that existed from 1849 to 1877. The fort, which is now known as Camp Ripley, was located on the opposite bank of the Mississippi River from Morrison County, where the current city of Crow Wing is located. Fort Ripley was constituted as a city in 1927. It got its name from the fort, which was named for American soldier and politician Eleazer Wheelock Ripley.

Jenkins, MN

Jenkins is a city in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, that is located in the United States. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 430. Jenkins is a post office that has been in operation since 1895. George W. Jenkins, a local lumberman, provided the inspiration for the city’s name. Jenkins became a city in 1969 after being founded as a village in 1904.
